In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus reads a passage from Isaiah “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me. He has sent me to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to liberate the oppressed and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor”. In this passage we are reminded that God’s love for us expresses itself in justice. John Wesley lived in times of upheaval like these and he responded. As Christians we fall back on the wisdom our church has accumulated over many times of trial and we discern anew what moral witness requires of us.
